13.032019116 Swedish Gambling Licenses Issued: More on the Way
In January this year a change in Swedish gambling law was announced and this forced the world’s biggest companies to take notice. In the few short months since then the Swedish licenser, Spelinspektionen, has handed out over 100 licenses, many of which have been granted in the last few weeks.
Over 50% of these licenses were granted to online casinos, with the rest going to sports books and land-based casinos. Some 116 have been released in total as of today, with 72 different companies on the receiving end.
That’s a lot of activity in a couple months, but it’s proof, if needed, that the Nordic gambling market is huge and that Sweden is one of the most lucrative markets. After all, many of the world’s biggest gambling brands were founded here and are still based here, including the multiple award-winning Yggdrasil Gaming.
It’s an affluent country with a strong history of gaming and a young populace that is always ready to risk a few Krona on the spin of a wheel or the outcome of a match.
The regulators and authorities are now scrambling to accommodate this sudden influx and in the coming months there could be some signifiant changes in advertising laws and tax laws. They will look to keep more money in the country while trying to reduce problem gambling.
In the meantime, however, Sweden will likely experience what many are predicting to be a Golden Age of Gambling in the country, one that could rival the gambling landscape in countries like the UK.
